Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a sudden and unexplained death of a baby. Also referred to as “crib death”, since this syndrome happens while the child is sleeping. SIDS affects infants from one month old to 1 year of age. Almost always happening to apparently healthy children. The baby is usually found dead in their crib after being put down to sleep. SIDS is responsible for roughly 1 death per 2,000 births in the U.S.
The reason I’m writing about SIDS is because a friend of mine recently had this happen. Her baby girl was born on November 10, 2008. She started work again weeks after. Her husband would take care of the baby while she was at work. On December 15, 2008 at around 2′o clock in the afternoon her husband put the baby down in her crib for her usual nap. He said he went back in the room 30 minutes later to check on the baby when he noticed she wasn’t breathing.
The first thing he thought was to take the baby to the hospital, which he did. He drove about 20 minutes to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately by then it was too late. The doctor told him that if the baby had received medical attention maybe even 5 minutes before they could have done something for save her. She passed away a little over one month of age.
Now he feels guilty. He ponders about what would of happened if he would of called 911 instead, could that might of saved her?? He remembers having to tell his wife that their baby girl had died. Can you imagine ?
Such a tragic story, but true. This is happening more than you think. Parents are being left feeling lost, confused, saddened and guilty, a feeling that will stay with them forever. I never truly understood this until recently when it happened. I feel so grateful to have my daughter with me. And I pray that all the parents going through this find comfort in God and their families.
